Once a simple shopping street structuring the southern part of the Faubourg du Temple, the street became a fashionable place in the 1990s. Numerous cafés and restaurants, nightclubs and concert halls have opened on the street—particularly in its eastern half, near Ménilmontant—and in the surrounding area, such as Rue Saint-Maur and Rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud. Most of the old workshops have been converted into art galleries or offices for architects, artists and designers.
